Request for stories from a grad student

Hi. My name is Nicole Henson. I am currently working on my Masters Degree to get my BCBA to become a behavioral Analyst. I love working with children who have been diagnosed with Autism. They are such sweet kids and I love helping them. I am employed at an elementary school helping children with Autism in the general education setting. I also have a brother who was diagnosed with Autism about 11 years ago. He is such an awesome kid!
For my masters program I am taking a class about how disabilities affect families. I am desirous to learn about other families perspectives on having a child that has been diagnosed with Autism. What were some of the challenges you faced? What were some of the successes you had? Were there certain things you were worried about? What is your perspective on your child's education program? Have you had problems with the educational system? What are some of the joys your child or children have brought you?
I really appreciate any comments and the time you take to make them!

I have two boys with autism. The oldest is 18 and he was more classic autism as a baby and toddler, but responded to ABA like a duck to water and has come a long way. My younger son seemed to develop more typically but then regressed. He is now 14 and basically non-verbal. He fought and ritualized ABA. We have had both boys in every schooling possible except homeschooling. They have gone to gen ed schools in gen ed classes, they have both been in self contained schools and classes. They have been in private and public schools and all have had their good and bad points. Sometimes we have had to fight desperately to get what we need but for the most part we subscribe to the adage that you get more flies with honey than vinegar and have had mostly very helpful and dedicated teachers. The joys are many. My boys are honest, helpful and funny. Feel free to e-mail me if you have more specific questions. julies3334@gmail.com

Personal space that's where we are again! I try to explain he has autism please understand... biggest fear he'll anger the wrong person. Vincent is 12, verbal but repeats movie quotes to express himself. After years of working on respecting people's space he has regressed especially with girls. Feeling sad but mostly scared...
