Another Community Building Opportunity!

Autism Mom Rising is great at finding opportunities for our blogging community to get out and about and make new friends. This week we'll begin commenting for the IComLeavWe (there's still time to sign up!); Autism Learning Felt also hosts something similar, the Special Needs Blog Hop where you go comment at the blogs on the list on Thursday.

It's a big list, but I bet we can help it get bigger!

I'll be visiting the blogs listed on the Blog Hop and adding the ones that aren't already on the directory to it! I hope you'll take the time to look at Blog Hop and IComLeavWe. Even if you don't feel up to making the round robin of comments, maybe there will be some blogs that interest you and give you the chance to build community!

This is great Kim! I also saw on FB that there is a Down Syndrome Blog Directory. Since 10% of all Down Syndrome Kids also have an Autism diagnosis that might be a good community for us to connect with as well. I was given that figure when I was hosting a table at an Autism Awareness even locally and someone from the Down Syndrome Group asked if she could put materials on our table. I had no idea so many Down Syndrome individuals also have Autism.

There is something else I'd like to add about Down Syndrome and Autism for the sake of awareness. The average age a Downs kid gets an autism dx is 10 - even if that person has an involved form of Autism! This is because everything gets dismissed as being "just the Downs", kind of like how my son's Landau Kleffner Variant got dismissed as "just the Autism" and meanwhile he kept regressing into middle childhood.

A fairly predictable indicator if a Downs baby will later be diagnosed with Autism is if he or she has seizures.

Just wanted to get that out there, since it is not well know. Having a child with a dual dx that got missed for too long makes me rather passionate about the issue in general.

Thanks for the information on Downs and autism; many in our community may not have been aware of the overlap.
